What size cranking/depth finder size batteries......
BigNasty06
Are you guys running in your boats? Model, size, pros/cons, and estimated price paid for them?

So the storyline goes i have a Hummingbird 899 CI/SI Bow imaging system, Hummimgbird 698 CI/SI console unit, onboard livewell system, Oxygenator aerator, along with the KVD Hydrowave device connected to my Optima 34 series Yellow Top Deep cycle marine battery. Battery is approx. 2.5yrs old. 870 CA. 750 CCA. 120 RC.

When i initially tested the used up battery after the Stewarts T. It read 11.70 volts. Under load (trying to start up outboard engine, the volts dropped down to 6.82 volts.

After recharging Saturday night into Sunday Mid morning, the below image was the reading....13.40 volts. Upon restarting the engine, it did not drop but rose to 14.40 volts without a hestitation in the startup process.

What are your thoughts and recommendations?

The battery isnt that old. Did you charge it at all over the winter?

I would turn your electronics and what ever else you can turn on in the driveway and see how long it lasts. Maybe it just needed a good charge?

Yeah...its been charging over the entire winter. Its on a trickle charge and adjust the amperage as each bank reaches the Go Fish indicator mark.

The crazy thing on Saturday other than filling livewell up with water innthe AM, i didnt run the circulator. Imagine if i did?

You need to load test the battery. Optimas used to be good until the last few years where the quality dropped. I heard they moved the plant to Mexico or something. Most people are running cheap Walmart or pep boys marine dual purpose batteries. Get the biggest you can fit in the boat. They seem to last a few years and have good warranty. Don’t get Duracell.

Definitely time for replacement. I echo what Jackie Chan said above. I don’t recommend paying over 100$ per battery. Optimas are not what they used to be. I plan on replacing every ~2-3 years anyway. The way we use our batteries is a harsh environment for any battery. I just put 2 pep boys batteries in my little boat. Can’t speak for longevity yet but I believe they are running a sale till 3/31 where I got them for 75$ a piece with core return. Just my opinion

Thanks for the info Guys.

It does seem like the Optima quality has decreased over the last several years.

I will definitely look into the Champion batteries.

I agree with the above. I have 4 Walmart batteries in mine. 5 years old and no issues.

I do walmart. All my batteries are walmart. Im always able to squeeze extra time out of the cranking battery for some reason. Thats why i first impression of 2.5 yr old optima should be young. I dont even charge mine over the winter., unless i know im going to use it. The trolling motor batteries i change every 2 years now. They go a lot quicker for me. I do the 29s for the trolling. Not sure on the cranking, but i dont think walmart has that many options for it. Get whatever you can fit.

Walmart has the best deal. If you keep your receipt you can replace them every 11 months if you chose. No questions asked .

advance auto will test your battery for free. I can't find my tester i had or i would bring it to the next tourney for you. I never had luck with the yellow top optima in the past, the blue top lasted me 6 years in my old boat. Right now I run a cheap deep cycle from advanced auto for my cranking and accessories. I have a commercial account with a discount if you need to use it. My trolling motor battery is one of the agm ones from cabelas been using it 3 years now.

Thanks Fingers on the information.

After our 1st tournament at Stewarts Lake, i load tested both my cranking battery and trolling batteries. Initially i got the 6.82 volts reading on the cranking and 11.8 volts onnthe TM batteries.

After a nights charge and under a load i got a reading of approx. 12.6 volts. On the 24 volt TM setup, i got 12.8 volts under a full load

So not sure if the batteries are just getting weak over time or from the heavy demands via our electronics. I'm keeping a watch on them and load testing after every event.

I had no issues at the Rainbow Tournament.
