Let the Real Fun begin....

Alright,
As has been discussed in the Sassafras Thread, we're going to swap the Noxentown, DE Tournament with fishing the Sassafras River launching out of Duffy's Marina on Sat. May 3, 2014 6am-2pm start and end times.

Spoke with a lady name Diana at Duffy's Marina and she said with the weather being so sporatic\unpredictable and Duffy's being backed up with getting the stored boats back in the waters, that by May 3, 2014, there should be plenty of space in the parking lots to host our 15-20 boat tournament. Normal launching fee is $12.00 per boat but I was told if I had a pre-listing of those boats wanting to launch paid in advance with a credit card, they would drop the cost to $11.00 per boat and everything would be ready upon arrival that morning. So I would not only need a boat count but that parking fee submitted 2 weeks before the tournament.

Now....since SJHT is a progressive Bass Fishing club and always interested in fishing different bodies of water, how about getting into some Smallie\Striper\walleye\Largemouth action. Can you Save the Date for fishing the Conowingo Dam\Lake launching out of Glen Cove Marina for Saturday, May 31, 2014 6am-2pm.

The Sassafras is pretty much a done deal, however I'm thinking of holding the Tag Team Titles for the Conowingo Dam\Lake event. Since most have never fished or rarely fished this place, I'm thinking of a level playing field.

Any Thoughts\suggestions? Pros\Cons?

Note: Waiting on approval via the SJBCA and Marinas in which I've contacted.

Thanks in advance.

FUN! I have never been there so can't give much feedback. I much prefer some out of state off season action instead of paper tx. I look forward to it, great call BN.

will the PRFC license cover this place or do we need another MD license?

Joe,
I was under the impression that since the Conowingo Dam\lake is connected to the Susquahana, that oru PRFC license which we normally get would possibly suffice. If not, I will the answer and try to report back ASAP!.

Regarding the Sassafras River, I again believe the PRFC license would also suffice, however if leading into Delaware tributary branches of the Sassafras, they're maybe some overlap. Again, I'll have to look closer into.

These are just some suggestions\alternates to fish during our closed season. I was also looking at possibly not counting towards the Points race.

Thoughts anyone?

I think it should count for points. If someone goes and blanks they should at least be awarded a point for their effort and gas spent. Just my opinion.

I was not even really looking at it from that perspective, but good point! I guess the bottom line, is whether anglers will be willing to try new waters with the possibility of additional license fees. Not that I'm opposed to fishing new bodies of waters and the like, I just want to expand the endless possiblities and experience of fishing outside New Jersey. Whether small, medium, or semi-large bodies of water.

when I first read about Conowingo yesterday with the mentioning of walleye and stripers the first thing i thought was we should not fish for points but just for fun.I wasen't sure about licenses.keep in mind the tolls for truck and boat there pretty steep in MD coming back from VA last week i spent 36.00 for three tolls coming back through MD just some thoughts

As long as it doesn't coincide with my daughter's graduation I'm in. I agree it should count for points.

From what I remember fishing the Pa Club, you needed a Pa. license to fish the Conowingo. If you ran up to the first creek on the left coming out of Glen cove, and went up that creek which is Broad Creek, you would need a Maryland license also. That is where the boundsry line starts from what I remember. And yes I agree it should count for points.

Something I found

Conowingo Lake is a reciprocal boundary water situated in Maryland and Pennsylvania. However, in this particular body of water, unless you are fishing from shore or inside a Pennsylvania creek, Maryland fishing regulations prevail. If you’re fishing the lake’s main body, a license from either state is acceptable, but if you fish in the creeks or from shore, you must have a license issued from the state where you are fishing. In both states, bass season is closed until June 15; however, catch-and-release fishing is now permitted in both jurisdictions.

Bass season closed until June 15?

This almost sounds like a moot point. byebye

If closed in both states which I fear maybe the case, then the conowingo may have to be scrubbed. Plus another thing is water flow coming down the Susqhana. If ice melt/run off from up stream is severe enough, it may not be a safe option.

How do we fish the flats if its closed season?

Crappie Jon
Maryland doesn't have a closed season. They raise their minimum size to 15" (I think, is this only for tidal water?) Delaware has no closed season or size change. Pennsylvania has a similar closed season to use. Guess it comes down do they consider it a md body of water or a pa body of water

There are numerous tournaments launching out of Anchor marine, NorthEast MD during our NJ\PA Closed season. We've never had a problem nor has it been an issue when weighing fish in.

When we fish the Sassafras River (and it will only be the Sassafras), I have color map print outs to depict the stated boundaries. No running to the Elk or NorthEast as the Sassafras is our target body of water. More info. to come but the Sassafras is large enough even for some of our smaller vessels.

Regarding the water flow on the Conowingo Dam\Lake, if the flow\clarity\potential seen and unseen debris is not right, a decision will be made hopefully before that date.

Note:We're fishing the NorthEast MD area approx. 10 days after the Sassafras River Tournament so giddy up.
