Angler Observation- Fungal Bass
BigNasty06
Hi everyone,

You are receiving this email because you have registered to host a tournament in the upper Chesapeake Bay for 2013.? The Conservation Director of Maryland Bass Nation recently sent me an angler?s photo of a bass from Anchor Marina (see attached).? The bass has a fungal infection and is lazily swimming at the surface.? I sent it to our fish health folks, but they couldn?t definitively tell more than that from the photo.? As you conduct your tournaments this year, please ask your anglers to inform you or me directly of any similarly infected bass.? Last year, I pulled a similarly infected bass from Anchor Marina during a tournament.? It was infected with parasites, fungus, and tested positive for LMBV.

As you know, infections or lesions are not uncommon for largemouth bass; many survive wounds and other problems.? In addition, several species carry LMBV in the Bay, though there are no known outbreaks of LMBV disease for bass in the Bay.? Regardless of the immediate causes, the infection you?ll see in the photo is pretty severe in my opinion.? If more fish are observed with similarly severe infections, we?ll conduct a survey of the area and bring fish with lesions to our UMD College Park campus for a fish health diagnostics.? Please alert your anglers and let us know if you see any other similarly infected fish on the Susquehanna Flats or in the upper Northeast River.

Take care and have a good Memorial Day weekend.? Joe.
